Q: What led you to become an expedition leader?
A: In 2001 I moved to southeast Alaska to work as a hiking and rafting guide leading tours in the Klondike National Historical Park and Alsek-Tatshenshini
Wilderness Preserve. I was inspired by the unbelievable stories told by early explorers and the Alaskan Natives. The natural history was truly overwhelming; glaciers carving valleys into the forested coastline below, with wildlife swimming among the icebergs. It became addictive. The opportunity to share that sense of discovery and inspire people to explore is why I became an expedition leader.
Q: Of all the places you’ve traveled to, do you have a favorite place?
A: So far, the most amazing place I have ever visited is the island of South Georgia. I also hear it is Sir David Attenborough’s favorite place on Earth.
Q: What one item is a “must-have” when you travel?
A: A SteriPen is a must-have when I travel; this amazing gadget is a handheld UV water purifier. It has been in my travel bag

for the last 10 years. You can significantly reduce your plastic bottle consumption and protect yourself from water-born illnesses with it.
Q: Where haven’t you traveled that you would like to go?
A: One place that I haven’t traveled to that I would like to go to is Tonga. Swimming with humpback whales is top of my bucket list currently.
Q: Any advice for those interested in experiencing an expedition cruise for the first time?
A: Sailing plans on an expedition cruise will have some flexibility built in, allowing the expedition to take advantage of unexpected opportunities when they present themselves. Be prepared to enjoy plans B and C as though they were plan A, because adventure is not always written on a schedule.
