What once was home to one of city’s most prominent families, the Dandolos, Hotel Danieli Venice sits gracefully next to the legendary Venetian lagoon on the Riva degli Schiavoni, just moments away from Saint Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Not only are the hotel’s views of the Grand Canal unparalleled, but its location makes it quite easy to explore the city, rightfully known as the Queen of the Adriatic.
A History Revisited
Hotel Danieli evolved from three palaces dating from the 14th, 17th and 19th centuries. The central building built in the 14th century, the Palazzo Dandolo, is Venetian Gothic in style and was the palace home of the Dandolo Family. Of the four Dandolos that served as the Doge of Venice, Enrico Dandolo amassed the greatest fame when he conquered Constantinople in 1204. When he returned to the city, he brought with him a bounty of gold, marble and Byzantine artwork, some of which was later incorporated into the Palazzo Dandolo’s gorgeous interiors. This famous palazzo became a favorite place to stay for many princesses, kings, cardinals and ambassadors throughout the centuries. But before becoming a hotel, Palazzo Dandolo fell upon unfortunate times and the property was divided amongst several families.
In 1822, Giuseppe Dal Niel, “Danieli,” rented a portion of the palazzo and started a hotel which he called Hotel Royal. Eventually, he bought the entire palazzo and welcomed guests such as Charles Dickens, Greta Garbo, Giorgio Armani, Sophia Loren, King Guglielmo of Prussia and Charlie Chaplin to name a few. The city’s former treasury, Palazzo Casa Nuova and Palazzo Danieli Excelsior combined with the Palazzo Dandolo make up the Hotel Danieli Venice as it stands today. In 2008, Hotel Danieli Venice underwent an intensive restoration and renovation of all of its guest rooms, suites and the world renowned Restaurant Terrazza Danieli.
Artfully Designed
Inside Hotel Danieli’s three intertwine palaces guests will find an elaborate collection of artworks, antiques, Murano glass chandeliers and Venetian mirrors that match the extraordinary Byzantine facade and pay homage to the rich culture of Venice. Luxurious decor extends into all 204 guest rooms and suites. The rooms encompass the latest in modern technology as well as antique furnishings. Each room contains plush Luxury Collection beds, high-speed Wi-Fi, flat- screen LCD televisions, customized bath toiletries by Laura Tonatto in the guest rooms, and Acqua di Parma toiletries in the suites. The bathrooms feature luxurious marble and many guest rooms have balconies overlooking the Venice lagoon.
There are four opulent suites which were renovated in 2012 that feature designs by French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The prestigious Doge Dandolo Royal Suite, named after Doge Enrico Dandolo, is over 1,600 square-feet of pure luxury with breathtaking 180 degree views from its balcony of the Grand Canal and San Giorgio Maggiore Island. This suite offers a taste of the regal life from its ornate gilded Baroque armchairs, soaring ceilings that boast dark wooden beams, marble-clad bathroom with Turkish steam bath, private dining area and antique Murano chandeliers. The Signature Diva Suite, Signature Soprano Suite and Signature Princess Suite range from 807 square-feet to 1,076 square-feet and were inspired by three esteemed female figures from fashion, music and cinema to reflect the allure of these icons.
Along with its unforgettable guest rooms and suites, guests will find an impressive culinary scene at Hotel Danieli. The rooftop Restaurant Terrazza Danieli offers an edible journey like no other with awe-inspiring views of the Grand Canal. The inspired menu spotlights delights inspired by Marco Polo’s travels to the Orient combined with Mediterranean flavors. Executive Chef Alberto Fol keeps the menu constantly evolving with the freshest of local seasonal ingredients used. The decor designed by Jacques Garcia is romantic with a bounty of lush red velvet and exquisite long Murano mirrors hang to reflect the candlelight. The wine list is second to none with many Italian varietals. The outside Bar Terrazza Danieli is open from May to October and offers guests spectacular views of the Venice Lagoon. The newest dining venue, Danieli Bistro, is perfect for a more laid back meal. Here you will find traditional Italian fare along with international delicacies with impressive views of the Venetian Lagoon. If you’re a James Bond fan, make sure to visit Bar Dandolo where scenes from three films, including Casino Royale, were filmed here. Bar Dandolo can be found in the historic hall of the Dandolo Palace. This bar has an enchanting setting with live music to enjoy a cocktail and an appetizer.
Venice and Beyond
While staying at the Hotel Danieli, guests may never want to leave the palatial grounds. If you do though, you will be close to many of the sights that make Venice one of the world’s most visited cities. Just steps from the hotel’s front door, you will find an array of museums, shops and cultural sights. Spend a day wandering the bridges, alleys and little squares of Venice to discover the charming city. Guests of the hotel can enjoy easy access to the San Zaccaria waterbus making traversing the city a breeze. Of course, a visit to Venice would not be complete without a gondola tour along the Grand Canal. A short walk away is the famous St. Mark’s Square which includes Palazzo Ducale, St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark’s Bell Tower and the amorous Bridge of Sighs. Water taxis can be found directly outside of the hotel which can whisk visitors to nearby islands. Nearby you will find Murano, known for its handcrafted glass; the island of Lido, known for its beautiful beaches; and Burano, known for its intricate lacework.
With everything that Hotel Danieli has to offer, it is no wonder that Hotel Danieli has garnered many awards and accolades over the years, including the Luxury Waterfront Hotel of the Year by Luxury Travel Guide European Awards. Bar Dandolo has been listed amongst Italy’s best bars for 16 years by Gambero Rosso.
The Hotel Danieli Venice is nothing short of spectacular. With its central location, meticulous attention to detail in all guest rooms and suites, culinary delights and legendary service, it truly is the jewel of Venice.
